5206 == Biography ==
Barbara or Barbary Stone

=== Uncertain Origin ===Barbary or Barbara was born 5 March 1653/4, Her death is recorded in the parish register of St. Paul's Parish, Baltimore County, Maryland, where it also says, aged 79 years 5 March next.<ref>Reamy, Bill and Martha. Records of St. Paul's Parish. Vol. I. Westminster, Maryland: Family Line Publications, 1988.</ref> She may have been born in Anne Arundel County, but it is unlikely she was born in Baltimore County as it was populated by few Europeans at this time.

Dennis Garrett and Thomas Stone purchased 100 acres, called "Long Island Point," from Edward Mumford on 2 March 1685. Dennis and Barbary made their family home at "Long Island Point." A few months after Dennis was unexpectedly killed by a sword blow in 1691, Thomas Stone relinquished his share of this property to Barbary, giving her sole ownership of her home.<ref name="OvermireTS">Overmire, Larry, [http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=glencoe&id=I55284 Thomas (of Stone?s Desire) ** Stone] Genealogy of Fast, Shriver, Burns, Scott, McKibben, Including Descendants of Revolutionary War Veteran Christian Fast, November 23, 2004, accessed December 11, 2014</ref>
Some researchers have tried to use this gift as evidence of parentage for Barbary, but the wording of the deed is clear. Thomas Stone wrote:<blockquote>I Thomas Stone for and in consideration of the tender love and affection which I had to Dennis Garrett, deceased and for and in consideration of the love and affection which [torn] to his children lawfullly begotten of the body of Barbary Garrett his wife. ...</blockquote> He had "tender love and affection" for Dennis and "love and affection" for his children. Stone did not say he had "love and affection" for Barbary. Were these the words of a father, or a loyal friend and business partner?
Official records of this period were carefully worded, and typically, a father would have worded it differently. "Love and affection" for Barbary would have been appropriate, if she were related to him. Fisher concludes that there is no proof of Thomas Stone as the father of Barbary.<ref name="Fisher"/> The complete deed follows.

=== Baltimore County Land Record RM HS/341===
To all Christian people to whome these presents shall come, I Thomas Stone for and in consideration of the tender love and affection which I had to Dennis Garrett, deceased and for and in consideration of the love and affection which [torn] to his children lawfullly begotten of the body of Barbary Garrett his wife. Do by [torn] presents freely give grant assign and make over and by these present do free [torn] give grant assign and made over unto Barbary Garrett and to her heirs law [torn] begotten by the said Dennis Garrett all that tract or parcel of land being a mo [torn] of a tract of land purchased by the said Dennis and the said Thomas Stone called Long Island Point and whereas the said Dennis lived and enjoyed in his lifetime [torn] his own proper moiety or part the same land and all the buildings orchards fences or any of the appurtenances. I also hereby sign over from me, my heirs and adm. unto the heirs of the said Dennis (after the said Barbary’s decease) all their assigns forever freely by these presents. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this first day of March 1691/2. Signed with the mark of Thomas Stone.

===Note===
Deed of gift added as transcribed by Seely Foley to prove there is no mention of relationship in this deed between Barbary Garrett and Thomas Stone. I also made the marriage date a guess and took out location. The earliest parish records only go back to 1710. The earliest land records in Baltimore County begin in 1661.

=== Baltimore County Wills Liber 2/285 ===
ABSTRACT: The will of Barbara Broad gives a brief picture of an elderly woman concerned about giving her few possessions away to the remaining members of her family. The will was signed by Barbara on 19 JAN 1732 and gives direct evidence of her surviving heirs. The only son mentioned is Thomas Broad. He is named the executor and left all of her things that are currently in his possession. She also specifically mentions that he should have two iron pots, one spit, two pot drammells, two chests, one pewter dish and three pewter plates. She also names Charles Gorsuch a co-executor of her estate. Sarah Gorsuch, the wife of Charles Gorsuch, is called her granddaughter and left her bed and bed clothes, one large pewter dish, three pewter plates, one apron and two shifts. Barbara next mentions her daughter, Frances Haile, but does not mention the name of her husband. This likely means her daughter was a widow by 1732. Frances is left one large petticoat, one new apron and one shift. Barbara leaves her granddaughter, Barbara Broad, the daughter of Thomas one linsey woolsey gown and petticoat. Lastly, Barbara leaves her blue apron to Ann Broad, the wife of Thomas. The will was proved at court on 6 AUG 1733 by the witnesses: Hannah Green, John Merryman Sr. and Francis Hinkley. This would have been about 7 months after she wrote it since the year 1732 would’ve turned to 1733 in March at this time. <ref>"Maryland, Register of Wills Records, 1629-1999," images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1942-24151-27832-71?cc=1803986&wc=SNYW-RM3:146536801,150556101 : accessed 23 January 2015), Baltimore > Wills 1721-1763 vol 2 > image 166 of 211; Hall of Records, Annapolis.</ref>

=== Baltimore County Land Record TR A/221 ===
After the death of her second husband, Barbara Broad recorded the document transcribed below into the Baltimore Land Records. This was apparently to pass ownership of some animals and some household goods to her children by her second husband, John Broad, and her grandson by her daughter Hannah and her husband John Cole. This document looks like a will and is confusing because she did not die until 21 years later. Perhaps Barbara thought she was close to death. It is not unusual to find documents transfering personal property located in the Maryland land records. One wonders if her son ever ran off with Grace Ramsey.
To all Christian people to whome this present writing shall come I Barbara Broad of Back River in the county of Baltimore in the province of Maryland widow send greeting in our lord God everlasting. Know ye that Barbara Broad being of good and perfect mind and for the good will and affection which I have and bear to my own children, Thomas Broad my son and Jane Broad my daughter and Dennis Garret Cole my grandson by John Cole and Hannah his wife and for other causes and considerations me hereunto moving have given granted by these presents do freely give and grant unto my said grandson Dennis Garret Cole one heifer with her first calf, one ewe with lamb and the first colt my mare called Spirit shall bring to have and to hold the same and with their increase to him and assigns forever. Unto my son Thomas Broad & Jane Broad all the remainer of my goods, wares household stuff, plate, ready money, chatles implements and all other things alive or dead whatsover they be and in whose hands or possession and ever the same or any of them or any part thereof can or may be found as well in the tenement and apurtenances wherein I now dwell or anywhere else whatsover they the said son Thomas and daughter Jane giving me decent burial and payment of all my just debts by me owing or shall be owing at my decease to be by them in equal proportion by them to be paid and discharged to have and to hold all the above said premises to my son & daughter above mention to their proper use and behoof by them all equally to be divided between them as near as they can after my decease to them and their assigns forever. I remain in doubt my son Thomas shall or may prove undutiful and marry or go away with Grace Ramsey which god forbid against my will now if he should marry or go away with the said Grace Ramsey either before or after my death I give unto my above stated daughter Jane my whole ?? as above except one shilling which I give my son Thos. above stated unto her and her asigns forever to her own proper use and behoof and the said Barbara Broad in witness have hereunto set my hand and seal that 11 AUG 1712. Signed in the presence of Henry King, Mary Stevenson, Edw. Stevenson and Eliz. Stephenson.
John Broad's will on 18 Sep 1702 - 16 Jan 1709, referred to minors Thomas and Jean/Jane. Deed 11 Aug 1712, Barbara conveyed all of her possessions to my own children Thomas and Jane Broad. Dennis and Barbara had children Francis 1670 and Johannah who married John Cole.

=== Death and Legacy ===Barbary died 9 January 1733 in St. Paul's Parrish, Baltimore County, Maryland.<ref name="OvermireBS">Overmire, Larry, [http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=lovermire&id=I6960 Barbary (Barbara) * Stone] Genealogy of Fast, Shriver, Burns, Scott, McKibben, Including Descendants of Revolutionary War Veteran Christian Fast April 21, 2013, accessed December 10, 2014</ref>

5209 == Biography ==
Birth: Sep. 7, 1736
Somerset County
New Jersey, USA
Death: May 11, 1836
Belmont County
Ohio, USA
Phoebe Critchfield was born September 7, 1736 in Somerset County, New Jersey, died May 11, 1836 in Belmont Co., Ohio. Phoebe married William P. Workman in 1762. The home of William P. and Phoebe (Critchfield) was on the Pennsylvania-Maryland border, hence the birth of their children shows both states. It was said that William could avoid tax collectors from either state by moving from one side of the house to the other. As the children of the family matured, they, one by one, answered the call of the west and as early as 1799 were establishing themselves in Belmont County, Ohio. It was not, however, until William was 59 years of age and his wife was 69, in 1805, that they made the journey from Maryland to Belmont County on horseback to join their family. They probably came by way of a wagon road which George Washington had surveyed. This road later became the National Pike - Route 40. When William and Phoebe arrived in the territory, their youngest son David, and an older son, William, helped clear the land of timber to build a cabin. On Feb. 14, 1811 they purchased 200 acres - the land being conveyed by Executor of the estate of Daniel McElheran. The deed was signed by William and by Phoebe, her mark. This proberty was located on what is now Winding Hill Road. A portion of the farm was set aside for the "Workman Hill Cemetery" (now Davis-Workman Cemetery) Phoebe and William are buried there, as are many of their descendants.

She married on 16 January 1677/8,{{Citation needed}} as her 2nd, and as his 2nd, to Capt. David Jones. They had no children together, though David Jones had a son, Joshua born after 1643 in Wales, by his first marriage. After the death of Captain Thomas Todd, his widow Ann Gorsuch Todd married Captain David Jones, who lived at Cole's Harbor, part of the site of the city of Baltimore. Captain Jones, who gave his name to Jones Falls, the stream which runs through Baltimore, arising in the Green Spring Valley, had a dwelling house at what is approximately the corner of High and Fayette Streets in downtown Baltimore. This tract, originally Cole's Harbor, was later repatented by James Todd, son of Captain Thomas Todd, and called Todd's Range. It extended from Broadway on the east to Howard Street on the west, the northern boundary being Madison Street and the southern boundary the Baltimore waterfront. ===1671 Son John and the Howard Connection===
In 1671 Cornelius Howard was named guardian to John Todd, son of Anne Gorsuch and Capt. Thomas Todd.<ref name="newmanfox">Newman, Anne Arundel Gentry, pages 261, cited by Becky Fox, Email <beckfox @ aol.com> (28 Jun 2003) at http://dgmweb.net/FGS/H/HowardMathew-Anne_.html. Accessed May 13, 2015 </ref>
The origin of Cornelius Howard's wife Elizabeth has been much debated among genealogists. If she was Elizabeth Gorsuch, sister of Anne, then Cornelius would have been the uncle by marriage to Anne's son John.
Such a relationship is seconded by the naming of Cornelius, in Captain John Sisson's 1663 will, of Cornelius not only as executor of his will, but as "brother." <ref name="newmanfox"/>John Sisson was married to another of Anne's sisters, Frances Gorsuch.
In the 1690 will of Lancelot Todd, son of Anne Gorsuch and Capt. Thomas Todd, Elizabeth is named as daughter Mary Todd's "Aunt Elizabeth Howard."<ref name="newmanfox"/>

=== Death and Legacy ===
Anna died between May 23, 1694, when she witnessed the will of Edith Beacher, and September 2, 1702, when John Oldton was married, as his 2nd wife, to Mary Watkins (P 439).<ref name="VMHB24.4"/> Anna may have died before November 13, 1697 when John Oldton executed a deed with no wife joining.<ref name="VMHB24.4"/> She almost certainly died at Baltimore County, Maryland, where she lived.
Anna's death date is identified as (exact) May 24, 1695, without citation.{{Citation needed}} This is almost certainly not correct, and may simply be the day after her last known signed document, (the will of Edith Beacher on May 23, 1694).

===1662 Named in Will of Grandmother Alice===
Johanna Gorsuch, daughter of "my son John", was named in the July 7, 1662 will of his grandmother [[Hall-347|Alice (Hall) Gorsuch]], of Weston, Co. Hertford, spinster, widow of Daniel Gorsuch, proved February 3, 1662-3 in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, to receive an equal division among six grandchildren of "my lease for about five years yet to come, of about £52 a year in the parish of St. Olave, Southwark, payable by Frances Wilkinsonne and Richard Daniell. <ref name="jhp"> The Gorsuch and Lovelace Families, by J. == Research Notes ==
Note that there is considerable discussion that Anna Gorsuch and her sister Joanna were one person, rather than two. Note in this context that Joanna is named in the 1662 will of her grandmother Alice (Hall) Gorsuch, but Anna is not.
All of Rev. John and Anne (Lovelace) Gorsuch children's records have now been found, but we still have the question of whether Anna was identical to Joanna, or were they two different daughters. There was a discovery in the "Bishop's Transcripts" of the Walkern Parish Register of the baptism of Joanna Gorsuch, on March 15, 1639/40, found written in the wrong place, among the marriages for 1639 (pg 425).<ref name="VMHB24.4">Pleasants, J. Hall, [http://www.jstor.org/stable/4243555 "The Gorsuch and Loverlace (''sic'') Families (Continued): Anna Gorsuch and the Todd Family of Virginia and Maryland."] ''The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography,'' Vol. 24, No. 4 (Oct., 1916), pp. 425-440, Virginia Historical Society, JSTOR.org accessed April 19, 2015</ref>
J. Hall Pleasants, who authored the many articles on the Gorsuch and Lovelace families in ''The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography,'' believes the entry for Joanna was just a duplication of the entry for Anna. He contends that the correct entry is March 13, 1638/9, because Anna must have been married when she did not join her siblings in their 1656 petition for guardians.<ref name="VMHB24.4"/>
However, there could have been two daughters, Anna and Joanna, where Anna was married while Joanna had died before the petition in 1656. It would be a complex error with both the day and year different - possible but unusual.
Note that Joanna but not Anna is named in the 1662 will of Alice (Hall) Gorsuch.
There is no separate baptism for a Joanna Gorsuch at Walkern. The record for a baptism on 15 Mar is for Anna Gorsuch, baptised 15 Mar 1638/39 so the same person as Gorsuch-26.
Alt death 18 Jan 1676 at Gloucester Virginia is unsourced and may refer to a different Joanna Gorsuch.

Anne was born in 1640. She passed away in 1694.
