• == Biography ==

=== Origin ===No record of the birth of Dennis Garrett has been found. He was likely born around 1650 and was possibly born in Maryland.
Some researchers have placed him as the son of Francis Garrett and Mary Dennis. This researcher has found no evidence to prove this.
A possible brother for Dennis appears in the land records of Baltimore County. On 6 AUG 1672 a planter named Joseph Hawkins, of Baltimore County, conveyed to Robert Garrett and Joseph Summers, planters of Baltimore County, a 400 acre tract of land located near Back River called Dixon's Neck. This land deed has a connection to Dennis Garrett. A witness to the deed was Anna Todd. She is proved to be the aunt of Charles Gorsuch (Charles Gorsuch married the granddaughter of Dennis Garrett). Also, Anna Todd's third husband was John Oldton, the man who murdered Dennis Garrett. This Robert Garrett either died or left the colony, as no other evidence of him has been found.

=== Wife, Barbara/Barbary's, Maiden Name ===Dennis and Thomas Stone purchased 100 acres, called "Long Island Point," from Edward Mumford on 2 March 1685. Dennis, with his wife and children, lived at "Long Island Point." A few months after Dennis was unexpectedly killed by a sword blow in 1691, Thomas Stone relinquished his share of this property to Dennis' widow, Barbary, giving her sole ownership of her home.
Some researchers have tried to use this gift as evidence of parentage for Barbary, but the wording of the deed is clear. Thomas Stone wrote:<blockquote>I Thomas Stone for and in consideration of the tender love and affection which I had to Dennis Garrett, deceased and for and in consideration of the love and affection which [torn] to his children lawfullly begotten of the body of Barbary Garrett his wife. ...</blockquote> He had "tender love and affection" for Dennis and "love and affection" for his children. Stone did not say he had "love and affection" for Barbary. Were these the words of a father, or a loyal friend and business partner?
Wills of this period were carefully worded, and typically, a father would have worded it differently. "Love and affection" for Barbary would have been inappropriate, if she were not related to him. Fisher concludes that there is no proof of Thomas Stone as the father of Barbary.

=== Family ===Dennis married at St Pauls Parrish, Baltimore, Maryland to Barbara/Barbary Unknown. They had at least two children. After his death, Barbara married, as her 2nd, to John Broad.

=== Death and Legacy ===Dennis Garrett was stabbed by Captain John Oldton. John Stone, son-in-law, and other family members were witnesses and testified in court.<ref name="Barnes">Barnes, Robert, Colonial Families of Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Oldton was married to Anna (Gorsuch) Oldton who was the aunt of Charles Gorsuch.
