- == Biography ==
Ralph Pownall (b. 1530s, Lostock Gralam, Cheshire, England) was buried on 31 March 1606, Witton, Cheshire. The name of his first wife was Margaret, and the name of his second wife was Anne Ryley. His will was dated 24 October 1604 and proved on 01 May 1607 (Inventory of his estate taken on 14 April 1606).
His will says (in part): "In the name of god Amen the foure and twentith day of October Anno domini 1604, I Rauffe Pownall of Witton in the Countie of Chester yeoman, beinge of perfect Remembrance, but uncerten when it shal pleas god to calle me out of this miserable world, And beinge mynded to leave the world in peace doe make this my last will and testament in manner and forme folowinge., First I comende my soule into the hands of almightie god hopinge by the merits and passion of Jesus Crist his sonne to be made partaker of the kindome of heven and my bodie to be buried at the disposicion of my executors, And by the disposinge of such worldlie goods as it hath pleased god to bestowe upon me First geve and bequeath Elizabeth Boote my daughter now wife to Richard Boote xxs. in money to be paid her presentelie after my decesse by my executors. Also I geve and bequeath to the said Elizabeth foure marks in money to be paid by a marke a yere in foure yeres next after my decesse." He also mentions his grandchildren (including our George Pownall who received xxs. in money), his servants John Norcott, Ellen Leighe, Thomas Walley, John Bostock, and Richard Cooke, and his godchildren. "I geve and bequeathe to my sonne Humfrey Pownall two black bullocks. And the rest and residue of all my good leases tacks and chattels whatsoever moveable and unmoveable I freelie and absolutelie geve to my loving wife Anne Pownall & to my welbeloved sonne in lawe Peter Torbock and Margarett his wife my daughter. And of this my said last will and testament I make and ordeyne my executors my sonne Humfrey Pownall & my brother in lawe Roberte Ryley...."
